Getting Unstuck
Some followup thoughts on movement
Three Things, and Some Follow up Thoughts After Parenting Smarts Podcast Episode 123 on Movement.
I did not want to go today. I have too much to do! How am I possibly going to get it all done? As I battered internally with the option of skipping my fitness class and locking myself to my laptop, I recalled Shalini’s advice from just 24 hours prior:
“Don’t Negotiate with Yourself”
That is exactly what I was doing. When I was in a clear state of mind, I made a commitment to myself and to my health. Going to this class each Friday was part of that plan. I needed to push past the stress, fear, and worry and simply follow the well crafted (and well discerned!) plan.
In my episode on Movement, Shalani and I talk about the ways that regular movement help us get unstuck. We talk about the benefits of sport for kids and movement for our minds, bodies, and yes, souls. We also talked about suffering (and our mutual love of *Megan Hjelmstad’s new book Offer it Up).
Below are a few highlights from the episode, and things I wanted to share with everyone–even if you aren’t a podcast person (yet!). I hope the information will help motivate you to move a little more today. Also extra bonus today–a fun video where I literally was getting stuck midair on the ropes course. No rescuing was required
🎙️3 Things From the Podcast
This weeks episode of Parenting Smarts Podcast includes a conversation with Shalini Blublaugh, a friend, fellow Blesssed is She writer, and founder of PrayTrainGrow.
📖 One Scripture
“Not only that, but we even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction produces endurance, and endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us.” (Romans 5:3-5 )
✍🏼 One Quote
“What we do at home becomes normal for our families and our life” — Shalini Blublaugh
🧠 One thing ponder
I shared the words of Shalini’s instagram post, with a promise to share the whole thing. Here is her reflection of motherhood and movement:
it’s not just about aesthetics.
it’s about being the best example i can be to her - committed, disciplined, hardworking, gentle with myself, strong, + focused on Him amidst it all.
it’s about being able to swing her around in the kitchen on a Friday morning without a second thought.
it’s about allowing her to see me meet my own edges and push past what i thought was possible - so she knows she can, too.
it’s about living out the fact that the discipline and commitment i demonstrate in a workout transfers into our everyday family life.
it’s about really living - not just surviving, but THRIVING.
when you get to the heart of it all - it becomes clear quickly that it isn’t - in fact - just about you.
⌛️ What I didn’t have time to discuss…
Movement is not about vanity.
Movement is about health.
You are created in the likeness and image of God, with an inherent dignity to your human person. You are created mind, body, and soul, as an integrated being. The state of our bodies affects the state of our mind and our spiritual life as well. Take care of yourself. It isn’t self-indulgent or vanity. It is self-respect and should be done with gratitude to the Lord. He created you–so treat yourself well!
